A Family Visit to Rochester
Rochester is a city that can be found in
the state of New York on the edge of Lake Ontario. Rochester is full of life
and it has a great reputation for being a place that all the family can enjoy
with its interactive museums, zoo and amusement park. With so much to see, it
may be an issue deciding what to do first and so this short guide gives an
overview of the must-see sights in Rochester for the family.
Museums
The one thing that Rochester has in abundance
is museums but, before the eyerolling and shouts of “museums are boring” begin,
these are interactive museums. The Strong is the National Museum of Play and is
only a short stroll away from the best hotels in Rochester.
It is one of the largest museums in the U.S and offers an incredible collection
of play things from history as well as a huge centre for electronic games and
video games. It allows visitors to play with the exhibits which is something
that the whole family will enjoy, especially when you find toys from your own
childhood. The Strong is famous for its National Toy Hall of Fame that houses
over 60 of the world’s favourite toys, including frisbee, Dungeons &
Dragons, a giant Etch a Sketch, Pinball, an Atari 2600 Game System and Nintendo
Game Boy and, when you are all played out, you can venture to the Dancing Wings
Butterfly Garden and visit over 800 species of these beautiful winged insects.
The Rochester Museum & Science Center
offers over 200 interactive exhibits that the whole family will enjoy. From
wall climbing to powering robots to presenting your own weather report, there
is guaranteed to be something here that will be deemed cool by kids of all
ages. Once you have finished playing with lasers, head to the Strasenburgh
Planetarium where you will be blown away by their star shows.
Zoo
Seneca Park Zoo is only minutes away from Rochester
accommodation and is the pride of Rochester. Their conservation work is
important on a local and global scale and their hard work can be seen clearly
in the 15.5 acres of land just off the Genesee River. It is home to African
elephants and lions as well as polar bears, penguins and sea lions but it
doesn’t stop there, Seneca Park Zoo also claim to have living dinosaurs on its
site. It is a great place for a family of animal lovers as not only do they
show the animals who are happy in their environment, but they also offer an
important insight into their conservation work and how they are protecting
animals for future generations.
Theme Park
Naturally no holiday with the children
would be complete without a visit to a theme park. Seabreeze Amusement Park is
the 4th oldest theme park in the U.S and has over 60
rides to choose from including family
favourites Log Flume and rollercoasters. If rides aren’t your thing, there is a
waterpark complete with water slides and wave pool for the whole family to
enjoy.
