Top Sights to See This Summer in Rochester, NY

Summer in Rochester, NY is a thing of beauty and there is a comprehensive list of things to do throughout the season. From festivals to sightseeing to simply enjoying the local museums, there is always something exciting happening in the city.

The White Lady's Castle

If you are partial to a bit of exploration, then the White Lady’s Castle will be for you. One of the main Rochester attractions, it has fascinated visitors and locals alike for many years. Even though the ruins look centuries old, it was in fact built in the 20th century and it was a section of a hotel’s dining hall that would serve food and beverages to swimmers who used to enjoy Lake Ontario. As with many dilapidated buildings, a legend has sprung up around this one that centres around a mother and her daughter.

It is said that the daughter left the confines of the stately home to go for a walk in the forest, but she never returned. The over-protective mother believed that she had run away with a suitor and turned mad and, according to the local stories, continues to haunt the ruins and any young couples who come near it. Whether you believe the story or not, it is worth the trip from your Rochester accommodation to see the beautiful site and to see for yourself if the legend is true.

Rochester Lilac Festival

The Rochester Lilac Festival has been a firm favourite with the locals since its conception in the late 19th century. What began with a few thousand observing the flowers in the region has become one of the biggest flower festivals in the entire U.S. Highland Park can be found a stone’s throw from some of the best hotels in Rochester and it was designed by the same landscape architect who produced Central Park in New York City, Frederick Law Olmsted. The parl alone is simply stunning with glorious hills, huge open spaces and, of course, breath-taking lilac shrubs.

The Rochester Lilac Festival was formed in 1908 and has continued its annual tradition ever since except today it also has races, arts and crafts, live music and a competition to crown the Lilac Festival Queen. It isn’t just lilacs that can be seen, cherry blossoms, Japanese maples and rhododendrons also grace the park as well as a gigantic reservoir that stretches for miles. Once you have perused the flowers, you can take in a Shakespeare play as, every summer, Shakespeare in the Park is performed. It is a wonderful day for the whole family to enjoy.

ROC The Taste

ROC The Taste is a food festival that is held at the end of July in Downtown Rochester. It offers live music, merchandise and a fine selection of food and drink from local restaurants and vendors. It starts at 11am and continues the party until 11pm and there are samples as well as full priced food available. It is a wonderful way of seeing what Rochester NY offers on a culinary scale.
