Visiting Guanajuato for the first-time
For those
intending to spend a holiday in Mexico, apart from the popular seaside resort
cities, Leon in the heart of Mexico in Guanajuato state is a perfect choice.
One of the most scenic cities in the country, Leon also has a very illustrious
historical and cultural scene. There is an abundance of landmarks and
attractions to explore apart from great shopping and entertainment.

Plaza de la Paz: Located in the city centre, it is home to many buildings of
cultural and historical importance. The area got its name a sculpture done by
famous Mexican sculptor, Jesus Contreras. Some of the famous landmarks in the
area include the House of Perez Galvez, The Collegiate
Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato, Otero Palace, Legislative Palace and the
Municipal Palace among others. The Plaza area was created to commemorate the
end of the Mexican War of Independence and was dedicated to the nation in 1903
by President Porfirio Diaz.
El Callejon
del Beso: In English, it is known as the ‘Alley of
the Kiss’ and is a popular spot for couples to explore on a trip. As with most of the streets found in
Guanajuato, it is a narrow alley that has a winding staircase. Local legend
says there was a young couple that lived across each other with their balconies
almost touching, from which they would kiss each other. While the tale has a
tragic ending, it has become popular with couples visiting with the belief that
any couple kissing on the third step will enjoy seven years of blissful
love.
Alhóndiga de Granaditas: The
Mexican Independence Movement began at the historic Alhondiga de Granaditas
when a local hero Pipila carried a torch and tar and set Alhondiga’s entrance
ablaze. This was in protest against the Spanish colonisers that used oppressive
measures against the local population. It is one of the most prominent tourist
spots in the city and also exhibits Guanajuato’s history starting from the
pre-Hispanic era to the time Mexico gained independence. The museum’s
collection includes more than 9,000 items.
Teatro Juárez: One of the most famous architectural
creations in town, the Teatro Juarez features a blend of Roman and Oriental
architectural styles. It is among the best-known theatres in the country and
plays host to the annual International Cervantino
Festival. A great place to enjoy a theatrical performance on a trip to the
area.
